The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture

Organisation profile

Rector: Sven Felding
Prorector: Jørgen Hauberg

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture is one of the world's oldest schools of architecture. It was founded in 1754 as 'The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' and aimed to unite the education of artists and craftsmen in the three disciplines painting, sculpture and building.

In the 1970s, the school became an independent institution with its own management and was given the status of institution for higher education. Thus, the School of Architecture could issue diplomas in architecture (cand.arch.) corresponding to the university master's degree, and still retain its artistic and professional relations and status within the Academy of Fine Arts.

The school educates architects in the art of building and restoration, urban and landscape planning and architectural design. Nine study departments ensure teaching at all levels, while research is carried out in four institutes and six affiliated research centres.
See the school's website for additional information e.g. on the school's strategies concerning research and education.

Since 1996, the school has been located on the island of Holmen. Holmen is a former military area in Copenhagen's historic city centre and now home to a series of artistic studies under the Ministry of Culture.

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture Library (KASB) is closely linked to the school. KASB is not only library for the School of Architecture, but also a public research library, accessible to architects as well as the general public. KASB's collections comprise approx. 65.000 books and journals covering the fields of architecture, building, urban and landscape planning and design. The library's current projects include developing image databases, supervising research registration and refurbishing the library hall.
Moreover, KASB manages the School of Architecture's part of the research database READ - Research in Architecture & Design.
See the library's website for further information.
