For a some years now, the social sciences have been exposed to criticism regarding its theoretical distinction of ‘micro’-level and ‘macro’-level. The gulf that Anthony Giddens tried to overcome by cross-determining structure and agency seems to have survived the attempt and in fact stitched abstract notions such as ‘the market’, ‘society’, and ‘globalization’ even firmer to our understanding of social life. Confronting the abstract terminology of macro sociology, Bruno Latour and Manuel DeLanda have in different ways employed notions of scale. I will delineate their conceptual variations of scale in view of a cross-discilinary comparison. For at the same time in a completely different field of study, scale is becoming increasingly important for architectural theorists. Chris Collinge, Philippe Boudon and others are suggesting scale as a form-producing design element. I propose a juxtaposition and manipulation of these concepts into a distinct definition of scale suitable for dealing with the design of public space. Examples from Ørestaden and Sydhavn in Copenhagen clearly show that contemporary urban development is seriously challenged in this respect.
