Department of Communication Design

Organisation profile

Head of Department: Rikke Hansen

Department of Communication Design performs work within three mutually profitable fields of expertise: graphic design, illustration, and interactive design.

The future research at the Department will be characterised by the rapid and manifold development of the digital technology, and the Department's wish to put design at the centre of the technological opportunities that come with it.

On one hand, the digital technology challenges traditional professional design fields such as graphic design and illustration. On the other hand, the science push, generated by the digital technologies, gives rise to the development of new professional foundations within these exact fields. Hereby, new professional design fields are created which must be explored.

In view of this, Department of Communication Design gives high priority to the research within four main areas of knowledge:

  • Communication and media theory - including communication concerning media specific genres such as information design, identity design, typography and font design, and similar.
  • Experience and interaction in communicative spaces - including new technologies' impact on the way we communicate and interact with each other; the relationship between communication, cognition, and the bodily experience, etc.
  • Design narrative - the narrative as material for graphic design, illustration, computer games, and interactive design.
  • Strategic and social design - including branding, campaigns, and organisational design.

Concentrating on these four subjects, the Department wishes to enhance the integration of knowledge between the three professional fields.
