The school's education is organized under the Faculty of Education and Research - a body that is responsible for the cross-disciplinary aspects of the educational process, as well as theory. The school's two institutes - Institute for Communication Design and Institute for Product Design house both research and educational areas that are specifically related to the specialist subjects. The Institute for Communication Design is made up of Graphic Design and Illustration and The Institute for Product Design is made up of Industrial Design, Fashion and Textiles.

The school is renowned for its international and creative environment, its high standards as well as its focus on working with industry. There is space for daring experiment and room for talent to be developed and challenged around the clock.

Kolding School of Design is in the middle of developing an innovative research department based on solid, scientific competence. By 2010 the goal is to attain accreditation as a higher, tertiary level educational institute and thereby formally be acknowledged at a level equivalent to foreign design universities.
