For more than 135 years, the School of Design has been involved in the development of Danish design and crafts with an international reach. Today, the school is a major cultural, educational and research institution, where Danish cultural and design traditions go hand in hand with innovation, new knowledge and creativity.

The School of Design is a university-level educational and research institution under the Danish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education. In 2011, the School of Design was merged with both the School of Architecture and the School of Conservation, forming together The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation.

The School of Design deals with many different aspects of design and crafts; from form and technology through innovative and creative development work to consequences regarding business plans, strategic design and sustainable solutions. The school’s education is based on the unique interaction of creativity, innovative methods, research and materials-based project work. The School educates designers (cand. design) in eight different design programmes as well as crafts artists in a three-year programme specialising in glass and ceramics.

There are approximately 650 students enrolled in the design programmes at the School of Design in Copenhagenand 70 enrolled in the crafts programmes at the School of Design, Bornholm.
